Spent the afternoon watching and enjoying NMYA performance of OZ! Beautiful theater and grounds.
The mural in the information center is spectacular. Glad we saw it and read the information about it and how the fresco was applied. Many interesting pieces of art in the museum too. The car piece was fun.
This is the location of Opera Southwest performances. The stage is perfect for both opera and orchestra. I just saw Bluebeard's Castle and the Doctor Atomic Symphony there. I recommend them both. There are upcoming performances on October 27th and 29th. I have also been to the museum several times. It is currently hosting "Made in New Mexico."
Ralph the security guard went above and beyond showing us around. Great attitude and great jokes to go along with excellent service. Keep him around and get him a raise!!
This center is that best one run by the state of NM. They have over 700 events a year since the new director ( R. Avitia) took over about three years ago. We just went to see the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. The photos are from that show and the building and the Disney Performing Theater. We also attend many of the Thursday night movies and a few of the plays and operas (including Spanish zarzuelas). On top of that, they rent the place for weddings and other events. My daughter's wedding reception was there and it was perfect. I hope that NM state continues to fund the place.
I've lived here 8 years and had never visited the NHCC. I'm glad I finally did, especially on a Tuesday afternoon. The place is well-structured for large events, but there was no one else there today. Admission was $5 for myself and my dad (a NM resident and a senior). That covers admission to the art museum, which is an interesting blend of local artists and others.
The grounds include a restaurant, performing arts center, education center, library, and a small rose garden. I gather there's an ice cream shop here too, but both the food stops and the gift shop were closed. Call ahead on those.
I came in last week to check out the museum part of things. Admission was fairly cheap and we had the entire place to ourselves. Photography of most art pieces is discouraged (as I soon found out). So allow yourself enough time to admire the artwork.
As it turns out, we came in during the last week of the Cholo/a special exhibit. It was considerably large and certainly captured the essence of that particular culture. I look forward to seeing what will (hopefully)soon take its place.
The rest of the NHCC was mostly inactive during our visit. However, if an admirer of symmetric architecture, the building can certainly serve as an exhibit all on its own. Definitely a place worth stopping by. Especially if you seek to learn more about a culture and identity that is so heavily ingrained in the DNA helix of the state.
Theatre A+. Sound and stage A+ Tab Benoit A+ Bar F HVAC F...F- I've never been more uncomfortable at a concert in my life. The heat is so unbearable, I'm outside. And the bar? 100s of people and 1 bartender? If serving alcohol isn't your thing, don't have a bar. No bar would be better than this. You can do better.
